//-->Jubilee Release # 18Jacob Karlzon 3More9533-ACT 9533-2Date:201012German Release Date: August 31, 2012take‘Rammstein? I take that as a compliment!’ Jacob Karlzonlaughs when one mentions the wonderful, often surprising, worlds of sound which he creates. Not in an ironicalfashion, on the contrary. He is even delighted. Thus helaughs out loud and heartily, like only a man of his formatcan laugh – very loud indeed. ‘Even as child I listened to alot of metal and electro. Although this type of music isnothing for pianists, its transported energy is, in fact, important. To listen to music that one does not makeoneself opens up totally new horizons.’Certainly, Jacob Karlzon’s horizons are wide. This pianist, who was named jazz musician of the year in his nativeSweden in 2010 and who became internationallyrenowned for his long running collaboration with singerViktoria Tolstoy, loves to work with extremes. This startswith his instrument whose emotional breadth ranges fromfragile gentleness to a sense of mighty awe.‘I came to jazz because I was really excited to engage inthe spontaneity which is involved in playing improvisedmusic. When I realized that improvisation above all isdirect communication with the audience it really grippedme. This sheer delight and fun made me desire for moreand more.’ And so Jacob Karlzon creates wonderful, largemusical images with his tunes and sounds. He achievesthis by employing his very own means of creation, andthese are truly astounding: His music reveals brillianttechnique in his play and brilliant play with his technique.Besides instrumental ability, a great imagination formodernmodern sounds characterizes Karlzon’s music. He calls it“technorganic” or also “acoustic but electric”. But theseare really only means of expression; they are not an end initself. The “jeans and boots guy” wants to tell stories ofexperience and dreams; he reveals something of himself,of his delight in music and performance. He does not wantto deliver merely technically brilliant fireworks, eventhough, of course, he delivers these too on his new album“More”, - his ninth CD and the first on the German labelACT.Together with his JK3 members, Hans Andersson on bassand Jonas Holgersson on drums, Jacob Karlzon createssoundscapes of marvelous power and intensity. Each of the eleven tracks on the new album offers newfacets, facets yet Karlzon never looses himself in detail. Therestless first piece, “Running”, opens up the scene whichranges from hints of metal-type sounds (“Dirty” and theKoRn cover “Here to Stay”), to the spheric-balladesque(“Nilha”, “Between Us”) and complex rhythms(“Departure” and “Epiphany”), to the final track“Rhododendron Rites” with its almost classicalresonances.Various sounds and structures, all of which developcharacter, something of a song character harmoniously workalongside each other. This includes the cover of NickKershaw’s hit “the Riddle” which, at first glance, certainlyseems to be the most unusual piece in the album. HereJacob Karlzon playfully integrates Swedish folk elements inhis work whereby he weaves individual motifs in seeminglydream-walking fashion into some highly virtuoso solopassages. What Jacob Karlzon develops in “More” is warm, livelyinviting, and inviting and at the same time surprising, floating andenthralling. At the beginning of each song we do not quiteknow where the journey will take us. What is certain, however, is that each journey in itself opens up newhorizons. ‘I write and perform music like a soundtrack soas to capture and describe atmospheres and feelings. Thisis a very important element for me in music. Already as achild I loved to run around and let the experience of thescenery around me be underlined by listening to mywalkman. What Jacob Karlzon develops from thesesceneries is music for the inner film; great “head-cinema”which integrates all genres, senses and emotions. More ishardly possible.Jubilee Release # 18Jacob Karlzon 3More9533533-ACT 9533-2VPhoto by Jörg Grosse-Geldermann01 Running 6:4402 Nilha 4:3503 Dirty 5:4804 Between Us 6:2105 Departure 4:5506 The Riddle (Nik Kershaw) 7:0107 Fool's Gold 5:2208 Here To Stay (KoRn: Davis, Shaffer, Silveria, Welch & Arvizu) 4:4909 Epiphany 6:2110 Rhododendron Rites 2:43Music composed by Jacob Karlzon, unless otherwise noted.Produced by Jacob Karlzon & Lars Nilsson.Executive Producer: Siggi Loch.Recording, mix and mastering by Lars Nilsson in Nilento Studio,Gothenburg, April to May 2012.Assistant engineer: Michael Dahlvid.Production team: Lars Nilsson, Jenny Nilsson and Michael Dahlvid.Additional recordings: ChassRoom, Malmö.Jacob Karlzon / piano & synthesizerHans Andersson / bassJonas Holgersson / drumsCover art by Robert Longo © 1983 "Speed of Grace", charcoal on paper.Auenstraße 47, 80469 München, GermanyPhone +49 89 72 94 92 0, Fax +49 89 72 94 92 11e-mail: info@actmusic.comVisit our website at http://www.actmusic.comDistributor:Allegro-Nail Distribution (US)A&N Music (GR)Andante Music (RO)Apostrophe (RU)C&L Records (KR)Divyd (SK)Dukyan Meloman (BG)Challenge Records Int.
